Tile-based Level of Detail for the Parallel Age
Today's PCs incorporate multiple CPUs and GPUs and are easily arranged in clusters for high-performance, interactive graphics. We present an approach based on hierarchical, screen-space tiles to parallelizing rendering with level of detail. Adapt tiles, render tiles, and machine tiles are associated with CPUs, GPUs, and PCs, respectively, to efficiently parallelize the workload with good resource utilization. Adaptive tile sizes provide load balancing while our level of detail system allows total and independent management of the load on CPUs and GPUs. We demonstrate our approach on parallel configurations consisting of both single PCs and a cluster of PCs
Link Quality Assessment Algorithm for Heterogeneous Self-organizing Maritime Communications Network
The article introduces a method of performing a radio link quality assessment based on the Link Quality Indicator (LQI) which will be calculated for every system that is available. The method presented has been developed during the netBaltic project completed in Poland and generally applies to the so-called maritime zone A, i.e. the sea area where ships are still within the range of shore-based radio communication systems, particularly 3G/LTE cellular networks. The algorithm was developed based on the results of measurements obtained during two separate campaigns. That measurement data served as a basis for the method’s initial assumptions and was utilized during the method’s verification
Wind Farms Influence on Radiocommunication Systems Operating in the VHF and UHF Bands
The following paper discusses several aspects connected with the wind farms’ impact on radiocommunication systems. The first part of this article is filled with the analysis of the ITU-R BT.1893 model, which was originally created for the analysis of the interaction between the wind turbines and digital TV receivers in the UHF band. A measurement campaign carried out by the authors confirmed that this model is also applicable for the lower, maritime VHF band. Utilizing the software implementation of this model, the authors conducted a thorough simulation analysis of the wind turbines’ influence on radio systems working in both VHF and UHF bands. The results of these simulations are presented and discussed in the second part of the paper
The National Institute of Telecommunication's activity for the developement of modern satellite systems and techniques
Ever since Poland become a member of the European Space Agency, the involvement of Polish entities in the area of satellites systems and techniques has significantly increased. This article presents the recent activity of National Institute of Telecommunications (NIT) in this field. Every section of the paper is dedicated to a specific topic the NIT dealt with in the last few years, including: the measurements of the GNSS signal availability in Poland, the standardization and analysis of the novel maritime communication system VDES, feasibility study of the Polish AIS/VDES satellite and the metrology of time
